Lance Armstrong isn’t the only cyclist who’s beat medical odds to race across the finish line.
Michigan native Jeff Bannink helped Team Type 1 set a new record this year in the grueling 3,021-mile Race Across America. Bannink and his seven teammates all have Type 1 diabetes.

Not one member of our extended family had ever been diagnosed with diabetes or type 1 diabetes, which was Henry's diagnosis, and the most severe case. Only 1 percent of children are given the same news that Henry was delivered. But instead of making Henry have a pity party for himself, my family immediately got involved in Henry, the 9-year-old with super powers, the little boy who could face anything.

A new study finds that women who ate vegetables daily during pregnancy reduced the risk of type 1 diabetes in their children. This is the first study to demonstrate a link between vegetable consumption during pregnancy and the risk of the development of type 1 diabetes.
