Record-setting cyclist Jeff Bannink to speak on type 1 diabetes

Lance Armstrong isn’t the only cyclist who’s beat medical odds to race across the finish line.
Michigan native Jeff Bannink helped Team Type 1 set a new record this year in the grueling 3,021-mile Race Across America. Bannink and his seven teammates all have Type 1 diabetes.

Phase 2 Trial of XOMA 052 to be Initiated in Type 1 Diabetes Patients

The trial will be sponsored by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF), the largest patient advocacy organization of Type 1 diabetes research worldwide. The trial sponsor is Dr. Marc Donath, Professor of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University Hospital of Zurich, pioneer in anti-inflammatory approaches to diabetes treatment, and a principal investigator in the Phase 1 studies of XOMA 052. XOMA will provide XOMA 052 drug product for the trial.

One Twin with Juvenile Diabetes

Not one member of our extended family had ever been diagnosed with diabetes or type 1 diabetes, which was Henry's diagnosis, and the most severe case. Only 1 percent of children are given the same news that Henry was delivered. But instead of making Henry have a pity party for himself, my family immediately got involved in Henry, the 9-year-old with super powers, the little boy who could face anything.

'Life for a Child' Documentary to Premiere on Sundance

The award-winning documentary Life for a Child will make its world television debut on the Sundance Channel on World Diabetes Day ' Nov. 14, 2009, at 8 p.m. EST/PST. Directed by Academy Award® nominee Edward Lachman, the film follows the journeys of children with type 1 diabetes amid the verdant mountains and swarming streets of Nepal, one the world's poorest countries.

Vegetables During Pregnancy May Protect Against Type 1 Diabetes

Another good reason to eat your veggies!!!
A new study finds that women who ate vegetables daily during pregnancy reduced the risk of type 1 diabetes in their children. This is the first study to demonstrate a link between vegetable consumption during pregnancy and the risk of the development of type 1 diabetes.
