Starbucks vs. Diabetes

I recently visited Dave Ramsey's web site to use his Mortgage Calculator and was amazed to see how extra payments, even small ones, can dramatically reduce your mortgage interest. You can even calculate how much you'd save if you gave up coffee and put the savings towards your mortgage.

Give up coffee? Nightmare. Just ask my wife. But, it did get me thinking. What if I gave up two cups of coffee this month - just two. Two grande non-fat hazelnut lattes at Starbucks - roughly $10. I think I could do that, but not because of my mortgage.

As many of you know, my son Alex was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on June 15, 2007. Since that day, a friend of mine refers to me as "Caused". My cause? To find a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes is a disease that results in the permanent destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. Two important things to know about diabetes and Alex:

1 - Without insulin my son would die.
2 - There is NO CURE... yet.

How can giving up two Starbucks coffees help cure diabetes? Simple, it will help fund a cure for Type 1 diabetes. I'm taking part in the JDRF's "Ride to Cure" in Killington, Vermont, on August 29th. I'm riding 100 miles to find a cure. I have a fund raising goal of $8500. I've raised $5200 to date, leaving me $3300 more, and I need your help.

Raising money in such troubling times is extremely difficult. That's why the only amount I'll accept is $10. I just want your two cups of coffee.

There is a catch, though: I need you to do it now. Right Now. When people read emails like this, they flag them with the intention of coming back later. But, they don't. That's why is it important to give up your coffee to help find a cure now. When you're done, please forward this to a friend who can help. Alex will be eternally grateful.
